ExxonMobil and its partners have achieved a sixth oil discovery in
the deepwater Stabroek block offshore Guyana!
The drillship Stena Carron spudded the Ranger-1 well in early November in
8,973 ft (2,735 m) of water. The well intersected around 230 ft (70 m) of
good-quality, oil-bearing carbonate reservoir, and reached a subsurface
depth of 21,161 ft (6,450 m).
ExxonMobil estimates resources from this and the earlier Liza, Payara,
Snoek, Liza Deep, and Turbot finds at more than 3.2 Bboe.
“This latest success operating in Guyana’s significant water depths
illustrates our ultra-deepwater and carbonate exploration capabilities,” said
Steve Greenlee, president of ExxonMobil Exploration Company.
“This discovery proves a new play concept for the…Stabroek block, and
adds further value to our growing Guyana portfolio.”
Following completion of Ranger-1 well, the Stena Carron will transfer to drill
the Pacora prospect, 4 mi (6.4 km) from the Payara discovery. The
partners plan further exploration drilling on the block later this year,
including potential appraisal work at Ranger.
The Stabroek block covers 6.6 million acres (26,800 sq km). Esso
Exploration and Production Guyana Ltd. is operator, in partnership with
Hess Guyana Exploration and CNOOC Nexen Petroleum Guyana.
